NEWS MAY 2004 EUSTON PARK SOUP SHOOT It seems like an eternity ago but the soup shoot was only on the 4th April. Archers from mainly the eastern region came to a breezy and showery Euston Park. The event was used as the selection shoot for the Norfolk Archery Association county team for the forthcoming Triangular tournament. Rounds shot at this event were the Long Western (4 dozen at 80 yards and 4 dozen at 60 yards), a Western (4 dozen at 60 yards and 4 dozen at 50 yards) and a Short Western (4 dozen at 50 yards and 4 dozen at 40 yards). Oh and not to be forgotten, and I nearly did, the Short Junior Western (4 dozen at 40 yards and 4 dozen at 30 yards). Taverham had some good results 1st's in Compound (Ladies and Gents), Longbow and Junior Recurve. The results were as follows:- Long Western Gents Compound 1st David Long 2nd Derek Ward 3rd Russell Carter (Taverham Archers) Ladies Compound 1st Shirley Giles (Taverham Archers) 2nd Ann English (Netherall Archers) Longbow 1st Steve Summons 2nd Andy Hood 3rd Phil Peterson (All Wherry Archers) Gents Recurve 1st Steven Burbidge (Fakenham Bowmen) 2nd Robert Prout (Botolphs Bowmen) 3rd Tony King (Wherry Archers) Ladies Recurve 1st Karon Boyce (Euston Park Bowmen) 2nd Lynne Burton (Havering Disabled Archery Association) Junior Gents Recurve 1st Thomas Wright 2nd Dale Eves 3rd Tom Mac Donald (All Fakenham Junior Bowmen) Western Gents Compound 1st John Carty ( Framlingham Bowmen) 2nd Ernie Mellor ( Framlingham Bowmen) 3rd Jan Bowen ( City of Cambridge) Junior Gents Compound 1st James Gilbert (Netherall Archers) Longbow 1st Keith Roberts (Taverham Archers) 2nd Peter Owen ( Cromer Archers ) 3rd John Howe (Euston Park Bowmen) Recurve Gents 1st Robert Norman (Gipping Valley Archers) 2nd Jonathan Brown (Gipping Valley Archers) 3rd Andrew Nixon ( Fakenham Bowmen) Ladies Recurve 1st Caron Mayes (Fakenham Bowmen) 2nd Sharon Caws (Euston Park Bowmen) 3rd Pat Bowen (City Of Cambridge) Junior Gents Recurve 1st Jason Mellor (Framlingham Bowmen) 2nd Mark Nattriss (Fakenham Bowmen) 3rd David Gilbert ( Netherall Archers) Junior Ladies Recurve 1st Charlotte Ellis (Taverham Archers) Short Western Gents Recurve 1st Kevin Corcoran (Fakenham Bowmen) 2nd Ray St.Clare (Parkfield) 3rd Steve Bullman( Parkfield ) Ladies Recurve 1st Janice Syer ( Fakenham Bowmen) 2nd Tina Slater ( Netherall Archers) 3rd Claire Loveday (Taverham Archers) Junior Gents Compound 1st Anthony Blow-Salas (Wherry Archers) Junior Gents Recurve 1st Matthew Alex- Fox ( Parkfield ) 2nd Tom Barber (Taverham Archers) 3rd Michael Judd (Mayflower Archers) Junior Ladies Recurve 1st Katheryn Gilbert ( Netherall Archers) 2nd Jade Aldworth ( Wherry Archers) Short Junior Western Junior Gents Recurve 1st Jordan Bullman (Parkfield ) 2nd Robert Lewis (King's Lynn Bowmen) 3rd Grant Carrol ( Gipping Valley Archers) Junior Ladies Recurve 1st Louise Clover (Gipping Valley Archers) 2nd Jemma Parker (King's Lynn Bowmen) Junior Gents Longbow 1st Ashley Bullman ( Parkfield) Just a little thing that I noticed when I was typing up the results that I am sure that you will all think note worthy. Charlotte Ellis competed in the Western under the Junior Ladies category and in fact had a higher score than the winning lady shooting the same distance. I am sure we all would like to congratulate Charlotte on this achievement. Taverham Easter Fun Shoot This was the third year we have competed in what can only be described as a mixed discipline event. The weather was with us for the best part of the day which I am sure made shooting a pleasure. Not too many arrows were lost in the woods and as far as I know no Archer either. We had several direct hits to the clout post, they were the father and son pairing of Tim and Tom Barber, Charles Sumser-Lupsom and David Long. For some of the people who have never seen clout shot it is scored with a coloured rope as if the target were laid on the ground. Just to put the difficulty into prospective the clout post that the Gents had to aim at was about 2" wide and around 12" out of the ground being shot at from a distance of 180 yards. The Juniors distance was 100 yards so I think you would agree that it is no mean achievement. Talking as we are about achievements and things which are nigh on impossible then we must next consider the Popinjay. The 90 ft tower is intended to simulate the shooting of live birds from their perches. Our very own John Watts scored 100 by bringing down the cock feathers. John also won a nice prize in the raffle (he may not know this yet s it could well still be in the back of our secretaries car) which was probably far more likely than hitting anything in the Popinjay. Could this be a record for this County? We will let you know. Target rounds were a Warwick (2 dozen at 60 yards and 2 dozen at 50 yards), a Junior Warwick round, with a special junior junior Warwick round for Master James Hood of Wherry Archers. On behalf of Taverham Archers we would like to thank Graham Harris for organising the event and all those who helped. The Results were as follows:- Gents Compound 1st David Long 2nd Charles Sumser- Lumson 3rd Robert King (all Taverham Archers) Junior Gents Compound 1st James Sizeland (Thorpe Hamlet School Archery Club) Junior Ladies Compound 1st Louisa Sizeland (Thorpe Hamlet School Archery Club) Gents Longbow 1st Andy Hood (Wherry Archers) 2nd Keith Roberts (Taverham Archers) 3rd Keith Quantril (Kings Lynn Bowmen) Ladies Longbow 1st Elaine Burbidge (Fakenham Bowmen) Junior Gents Longbow 1st Kieran Carr (Thorpe Hamlet School Archery Club ) Gents Recurve 1st John Watts (Taverham Archers) 2nd Nigel Norris (Mayflower) 3rd Tim Barber (Taverham Archers) Ladies Recurve 1st Maureen Hatton (Gipping Valley Archers) 2nd Claire Loveday 3rd Helena Mecrow (Gipping Valley Archers) Junior Gents Recurve 1st Tom Barber (Taverham Archers) 2nd Peter Norris (Mayflower) 3rd Joe Pearson (Thorpe Hamlet School Archery Club) Junior Ladies Recurve 1st Kathryn Gilbert (Netherall Archers ) 2nd Louise Clover 3rd Katie Whittaker ( both Gipping Valley Archers) Junior Junior Gents Recurve 1st James Hood (Wherry Archers) Can all members who attended these events please ensure they pass their results to Claire for record purposes. Taverham Web site Can we remind all members of the Taverham Archers Web site www. taverham-archers.co.uk, probably the best archery club website in the region. It is packed with information relating to club activities and updated on a regular basis. There are full results listings, record information, entry forms and also pictures of January's Stafford and the Easter Shoot. Our many thanks must go to Keith Roberts for constructing and maintaining this site for us. Club Merchandise I am very pleased to announce that Lynne and Derek Ward have very kindly taken on the job of club merchandise officers. Please contact Lynne with inside leg measurements on 01508 494544 for more details. 2004/2005 Subscriptions The 1st June will soon be upon us again, it does seem to come around quickly. Our membership subscriptions to Taverham Archers are shortly due for renewal. This year we are asking if you would all be so kind as to complete a new application form to ensure that all club membership details are up to date. A renewal notice and the application form will be with you by the end of May at the latest. Many thanks for your continued support. Handicap Medal As you may or may not know Taverham Archers purchased a medal from GNAS to be awarded to the member with the best handicap improvement in a given year. The 2003 award was made to our junior member Tom Barber. This award was the culmination of another excellent year for Tom and we wish him every success for 2004 Norfolk Junior's Training Day Due to a double booking at Fakenham and not wishing the finest juniors in the county to be trampled under hoof, Taverham will be playing host to a county junior training day on the 16th May. Shooting will be as usual for Taverham members. Club Coaching Workshop The club is considering running an informal workshop after the end of the outdoor season with a view to informing and educating members on a wide range of shooting subjects including bow tuning, fletching arrows and string making as well as improving shooting techniques. In order that we can have some idea of the potential numbers can members please express their interest to the club secretary.
